The
African American Academic Achievement Awards Convocation is a community-sponsored celebration. Its principle purpose is to honor and recognize the achievement and academic success of all African American high school seniors who achieve a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
This annual event also provides an opportunity to applaud the commitment and tireless efforts of parents, guardians, friends, counselors, principals, other individuals and organizations instrumental in supporting the accomplishments of these students.
Since its beginning in 1989, over 1,500 students have been honored. One unique feature of the convocation is that its primary support comes from the African American community and organizations. Many organizations use this event to announce and award their scholarships.
The nominated students will participate in an orientation that will give insight into the recognition program and will also participate in workshops that will enhance the students’ preparation for college. These workshops will provide the students with recommendations and tips for succeeding in college and life in general.
